Teeth Whitening in Santo Domingo: Myths, Facts, and What to Know Before Doing It
The perfect white smile: is it really that easy?

In my years as a dentist, I have heard the same phrase many times: “Doctor, I want white teeth like those on television.” And while it is entirely valid to aspire to a brighter smile, it is also necessary to separate myths from facts.
Today, social media and advertising can make us believe that anyone can achieve an extremely white smile in a matter of hours, without risks or special care. Nothing could be further from the truth. Teeth whitening is a serious procedure that requires evaluation, professional technique, and realistic expectations.
In this article, I want to share, from my experience, everything you need to know to make an informed, safe decision.
What does professional teeth whitening involve?
Professional teeth whitening involves applying a special gel—usually based on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide—that penetrates the enamel and removes internal pigments accumulated over time. The gel may be used with or without light, depending on the indicated system. Not all protocols require LED or laser, and supervision aims to reduce risks, not eliminate them.
The most important thing is that it is done under dental supervision. At-home options are not all the same: some are used under a dentist's instructions. Avoid acidic or abrasive mixtures and seek advice before starting.
Why do teeth become stained?
Not all stains are removed in the same way. Teeth darken with age, but also because of:
✅ frequent consumption of coffee, tea, red wine
✅ tobacco
✅ certain medications
✅ dental trauma
In my practice, I always first evaluate the type of stain, because not all respond to the same treatment. For example, stains caused by fluorosis or tetracyclines require other approaches.
How long does the effect of teeth whitening last?
A frequent and very valid question. With good oral hygiene habits and avoiding excessive exposure to pigments (coffee, cigarettes, etc.), the effect can last from 1 to 3 years.
Still, genetics, age, and diet play a role. That is why I recommend periodic checkups and, if needed, occasional touch-up sessions.
How much does teeth whitening cost in the Dominican Republic?
At Dr. Sabrinsky Flores's clinic in Santo Domingo, the price of teeth whitening is RD$30,000 for the complete treatment. The online booking is for the evaluation with a panoramic X-ray: RD$3,900 in total, broken down into RD$2,400 for the evaluation and RD$1,500 for the panoramic X-ray. This amount does not include the RD$30,000 whitening treatment.
My recommendation is to choose based not only on price, but also on quality, professionalism, and safety.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
You may experience temporary tooth sensitivity, as well as gum irritation, which is usually temporary. The dentist may adjust the protocol or recommend breaks depending on the discomfort.
Follow-up aims to reduce discomfort, but it does not eliminate all risks. If pain is severe or persists, seek advice before continuing.
Myths I hear every day
⚠️ “Whitening wears down the tooth”: Whitening does not involve grinding down the tooth, but the choice and use of the product require professional assessment.
⚠️ “Home remedies are just as good”: Acidic or abrasive mixtures can damage teeth and gums; they are not equivalent to products evaluated for whitening.
⚠️ “Only young people can whiten their teeth”: Age alone does not determine whether you are a candidate: teeth, gums, sensitivity, and restorations must also be evaluated.
Debunking these points is essential for informed decisions.
My whitening protocol at the clinic
1️⃣ Comprehensive evaluation: healthy gums, cavities under control
2️⃣ Prior professional cleaning
3️⃣ Protection of soft tissues
4️⃣ Application of the whitening gel
5️⃣ Monitoring of timing and response; use of light if appropriate for the indicated system
6️⃣ Follow-up and maintenance advice
The protocol is adapted to each patient. Results vary, and professional supervision does not completely eliminate possible adverse effects.
A white smile should not be just a magazine-inspired wish. It can be real, achievable, and healthy, as long as an experienced professional guides it.
