What happens if I do not treat a cavity in time? The truth no one tells you

A small spot that can change everything

How a cavity progresses: how a small lesion destroys a tooth

I have been a dentist for more than 20

years, and one thing I have learned is that cavities do not wait. What begins as mild discomfort or an almost imperceptible spot on a tooth can become, within weeks or months, a serious problem: acute pain, infection, tooth loss, and even complications affecting other parts of the body.

Many patients arrive at my practice in Santo Domingo with the same story: “Doctor, I had been feeling something for months, but since it did not hurt much, I did not pay attention to it.” By then, the cavity has already done its silent work.

Today I want to speak to you honestly and without alarmism, but also without beating around the bush: if you have a cavity, you need to act. In time.

What is a cavity, and how does it really form?

A cavity is a lesion in a tooth caused by bacteria that feed on sugars and produce acids that wear away enamel. This process does not happen overnight. In fact, in its early stages, a cavity does not hurt. And that is precisely the trap.

At first, it may look like a simple white or brown spot. But if left untreated, it advances toward the inner layers of the tooth: dentin and pulp. That is when pain, sensitivity, and, in many cases, the need for more complex treatments such as root canals or extractions begin.

Stages of damage when you do not treat a cavity in time

1️⃣ Demineralization: the enamel surface starts to deteriorate. It is still reversible.

2️⃣ Superficial cavity: a hole appears. A restoration is now needed.

3️⃣ Deep cavity: it affects the dentin. Cold or sweet foods may cause pain.

4️⃣ Pulp infection: the nerve becomes inflamed. It is painful and requires root canal treatment.

5️⃣ Dental abscess: the infection spreads to tissues. Risk of fever and facial swelling.

6️⃣ Tooth loss: it can no longer be saved. And a more expensive rehabilitation process begins.

“But if it does not hurt, why should I go to the dentist?”

This thought is common, but also dangerous. Cavities are like termites: they work from within, silently. By the time pain arrives, they are already far advanced.

At my practice in Santo Domingo, we have avoided dozens of expensive treatments simply because the patient came in time. With a simple filling, we resolved what could have become an extraction.

How much does it cost to treat a cavity in Santo Domingo?

The quote depends on the diagnosis, the condition of the tooth, and the recommended treatment. After the evaluation, request a breakdown distinguishing the filling from any additional treatments, such as a root canal, crown, or tooth replacement. The price is confirmed individually; this article does not establish a fee.

Treating a cavity in time does not just spare you pain. It saves money.

Risks they do not tell you about leaving a cavity untreated

⚠️ Bone infections

⚠️ Loss of several teeth

⚠️ Migration of bacteria into the bloodstream

⚠️ Impact on general health (relationship with diabetes, heart disease, premature births)

⚠️ Loss of confidence when smiling

As a doctor, I want you to understand that oral health is directly connected to general health.

My approach at the clinic: prevention with advanced diagnosis

At our dental clinic in Santo Domingo, we use intraoral cameras, digital X-rays, and personalized evaluations to detect cavities even before the patient notices a symptom. We also provide education on hygiene, nutrition, and plaque control.

It is not just about treatment. It is about preventing them from returning.

How can you tell if you already have an active cavity?

🚨 Sensitivity to cold or sweets

🚨 Pain when chewing

🚨 Dark spots on the tooth

🚨 Holes you can feel with your tongue

🚨 Persistent bad breath

If you have any of these signs, do not ignore them. Schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

What if I have already lost a tooth to decay?

The good news is that solutions exist today: implants, prostheses, bridges. But prevention is always best.

Every tooth counts. Every lost tooth alters your bite, your face, your speech… and your self-esteem.

There is no “small” cavity. Only cavities that have not yet caused pain. If you notice anything unusual in your mouth, do not put it off. Seeing the dentist in time can make the difference between keeping your tooth and losing it.

I am here to help you, without judgment, with modern technology and a team that supports you at every step. Your smile deserves attention before it is too late.
